I originally made these out of PAPER, and I thought - since the shapes are the same, they'd translate pretty well! My friend calls them 'busty layyddeees" but I prefer cute cookie chicks.

I plan to make them for my friend's bridal shower.

Mix up a batch of royal icing.

Use food coloring for a variety of colors, light pink for skin tone, black/brown/yellow/red for hair, and all the other bright colors for the outfits.

I like to use gel coloring, more than food coloring, only because you get a richer look, but either will do.

royal icing

Make your sugar cookie recipe - roll out the dough and cut out heart and circles. Some additional things like flowers or hearts can be used to accessorize.

Now stack the circle on top of an upside down heart. You might need a smaller cookie behind the top of the circle to support it. Use royal icing to 'glue' together.

I recommend frosting the basics before you add the detail.

Start with the pink skin tone, then the clothes. Add the hair and eyes and mouth after the rest has set. It only takes about 15 minutes for royal icing to start to harden.

tIf you want to add the little 'flip' of hair, put two half moons on either side of the back of the head. Frost them the same color as the hair color on the circle.

Now add the detail. Hair, eyes, mouth.

You can use candies and sanding sugar for the clothing as well.

Aw, aren't they cute?! You can change them any way you like. They make great personalized gifts, just make them look like the recipient!

You can make men too, but that's another craft, for another time.
